Featherweight / Heavyweight, an entry portal for Hacienda Santa Rosa (Tumbaco, Ecuador ), departs from the need to establish a clear boundary between public and private, driven primarily by safety concerns, and a desire to visually connect street and parcel. The design for the door capitalizes on the claroscuro created by the excessive vegetation within the property. The portal, primarily a thick assemblage of perforated fiber cement panels, acts as a continuous solid surface from the street side, while from opposite side the materiality of the panels dissolves as a pattern of light registers through the perforations.
