Levitating at 10,000 feet above sea level, secluded under an equatorial sky and immured by Alexander von Humboldt’s famous “Avenue of the Volcanoes”, San Francisco de Quito is an urban ensemble driven by the pervasive presence of the mountains, the most salient forms of urbanism that have shaped the city have predominantly acknowledged Quito’s unique sectional figure and effectively operated in between its paradoxical condition as established metropolis and new frontier.

“The Section as a Tool” is a first pass to establish both a subjective and objective unit of measure in order to single out today’s inherent need to acknowledge topography as the backdrop for current and forthcoming deliberations about the city; in order to guarantee a future that recognizes the relevance of the section as an critical agent in the city.

Establecida en mitad de los Andes, a una altitud media de 2.820 metros, Quito es una amalgama urbana de una morfología única y altamente dinámica, resultado de una relación, sedimentada por el tiempo, entre múltiples formas de colonización y una topografía increíblemente robusta. Condicionadas por la presencia dominante de las montañas, las formas más destacadas de urbanismo que han dado forma a la ciudad, han tomado en cuenta la singular figura seccional de Quito y estas han operado de manera efectiva entre su paradójica condición como metrópolis establecida y frontera a ser explorada. “El corte como instigador urbanístico” intenta establecer una métrica que permita un mejor entendimiento del rol de la topografía dentro del desarrollo de la ciudad y nos ayude a repensar estrategias urbanísticas que tomen en cuenta el gran potencial de la topográfico de Quito.
