Featherweight / Heavyweight, an entry gate for the Santa Rosa Gardens in Ecuador, departs from two opposing desires; to establish a clear boundary between public and private, driven primarily by safety concerns, and to visually connect street and garden.
The design capitalizes on the chiaroscuro created by the excessive vegetation within the property.
The portal, primarily a thick assemblage of perforated fiber cement panels, acts as a continuous solid surface from the street side, while from opposite side the materiality of the panels dissolves as a pattern of light registers through the perforations.
