Tripartite Table

Built for a dining room in Virginia and part of the Tripartite Furniture Series, the Tripartite Table is simultaneously a table and the materialization of a structural diagram. Made of iroko wood, blackened steel, and glass, the table is conceived as three separate structural pieces that when assembled, provide the support for a 96” X 33” X 1/2” piece of starphire glass.

The “arm and leg” sets are designed to provide the greatest amount of leg space. The load of the glass is brought to the ground through a five-point connection joint, tying together structural members in tension and compression.

The table is designed by Somatic Collaborative (with Devin Dobrowolski) and built by Armada NY in Brooklyn (NY). Construction details shown in the “parts breakout” and “sectional detail” drawings produced by Armada NY.

A set of tensor crossings tie together the two steel fins and also support the glass at one central point.

In honor of Paul Rudolph’s 100th birthday, the table made an appearance at the 101 East 63rd townhouse (former Halsten Residence) on October 23, 2018.
